  • And then in one fell swoop, Howard Stern’s new replacement, Adam Carolla, makes a mockery of the whole Asian Excellence Awards show (see entry below) with this radio sketch.  Unbelievable.

Even though the award show rightly recognized the wonderful achievements/progress of Asians & Asian-Americans last week, it sometimes makes me wonder how much of a difference it’s all really making when I hear blatant crap like this.

*EDIT: Yeah, many could just write this off as typical shock-jock tactics looking for people to call in and complain, so why play into it?

But on the other hand, I think a big reason why a sketch like this was even thought to be “okay” for airing is because we’re a typically apathetic and silent minority that usually just swallows this kinda stuff.

Does anyone think they’d even dare parody the BET Awards with Ebonic-filled acceptance speeches?  Hell, no.

  • all bad!

  • I could barely stand listening to that, it made me want to vomit. Why is that funny?

  • ahhh We just fought off those ignorant radio hosts in Edison, NJ who made a mockery of a Korean candidate running for a position in the city government and now this?! It is so hard to keep fighting but I guess thats our lives. Eventually, one day our children hopefully won’t have to deal with this right?

  • ugghhh… that guy is a loser.

  • Do non-asians even find that funny?

  • Corolla won’t last long if he resorts to that kinda crap after only 3 weeks on the radio.  Pathetic.

  • Ah Parry, don’t worry about that – it wasn’t even funny, and obviously anybody can see that it’s in bad taste. Besides, does anybody even listen to Adam Corolla? What moron gave that guy his own radio show, when he has such an incredibly annoying voice?

  • Adam Corolla is fucked up. This was revolting.

  • WTF??? Man, I was actually a fan of Adam Corolla from when I used to listen to loveline but man, thats pretty freakin’ lame.

I can see some sort of online petition coming up soon. I’ll sign it.

  • I find that joke very sad because I’ve listened to Adam Corolla for 10 years and I’ve always thought he was funny. I can’t believe anybody would find that joke funny, or how it was even allowed, especially when the show is in California, not some redneck backwoods.

  • I don’t get the joke?  Is he assuming “all” Asians talk like that?  I don’t know if I’m offended or not.. I really don’t think it’s funny.

  • people should totally prank him, or pelt him with eggs. or pie in the face in public or something. hah. something innocent but sufficiently vengeful.

  • I never liked that guy from the beginning. Jerk.

  • I live in the “redneck backwoods” and I don’t find this funny at all!

  • yeah adam carolla came from KROQ’s kevin and bean show and they blatantly insult the Pilipino community so it’s no surprise their work has created adam carolla making fun of all asians all over. i mean there’s making fun, and then there’s flat out ignorant insults and this was the latter. gah….how does this even get aired??

  • I’d love to see Adam Corolla get blasted by Kanye West for this…. ’cause honestly, even though I’m Chinese, I find it a total slur on the entire ethnic entertainment scene.

  • that was just plain dumb.

  • that clip was incredibly stupid.

  • hey parry, i emailed you maybe about a year ago about how to get in the biz, dont know if you remember. Anyway I think I just had one of my naive dream moments, but i’ve long since gotten back on track on what I really want to do.

    Keep up the good work.

  • I can’t believe that shit. Time to write a letter to that retarded radio show.

  • I haven’t looked at your link yet so I don’t know what he said exactly at this point but I hope I’m not too far off when I say this: I think with anything that’s up and coming and getting more recognition, in this case the Asian presence and achievements in the media, people will take hits at it just as they do with an celebrity who’s on the up or down. I think it brings awareness and publicity, potentially a positive one in that it might get people to take a second look at it, whether it be to evaluate their take on the Asian progress or to reinforce their support of it. Either way it gets people paying attention and talking, and if it wasn’t controversial, that would mean no one cares (back at square one) or that we’ve already made the leap and the Asian presence has been wholly accepted into the industry (clearly not the case yet). So, I think the state of things is evolving and we must keep ceremonies like this going to remind people that we’re here and not going anywhere any time soon.

  • that’s infuriating.   i wonder what his ratings were for that show

  • his girlfriend sarah silverman crapped on asians also. wtf?!?

  • I couldn’t stand and complete the whole skit. It’s too disgusting. If the whole Shaq incident was bad, this is much worst and it is right up there with the whole Tsunami song with that New York radio station from last year. Why don’t these caucasians get it?

  • Isn’t funny at all. Lame.

  • That is just sad.  I’m just amazed that somewhere along the writing process somebody thought that this was a good idea.  I just don’t understand…

  • it’s ridiculous how racist people still are, esp. toward Asian-Americans..while claiming that they’re only joking around. yeah uh huhhh..

  • Lol, oh my goodness. That’s the most ridiculous radio clip ever. It was so silly and juvenile that it made me laugh. Oh well, I don’t think we should let this work us up. It only gives them more incentive.

  • It’s actually Adam Carolla, not Corolla…

  • Why are people shocked or upset?  White (and black, for that matter) people have never respected Asians.  What has changed that would make this sort of joke not be broadcast?  Nothing.

  • ok…you guys have to calm down…it’s a radio show that only like 3 people listen too…i’m asian and it’s kind of funny, hardly an atrocity…i really doubt this is putting “asian progress” back…whatever that’s supposed to mean…adam corrolla is just some hack “celebrity”. hold your letters for important issues…like persecution of falun gong, the dalai lama and such. protesting guys like adam corrolla will just give him more publicity…bad publicity is good publicity

    acknowledge…and move on.

  • racial jokes. comedians make them all the time but i don’t find this one funny. it just lacks intelligence and good taste.

  • heh heh. we need more jokers around.

  • pie in the face! peopel should trhow pies in his face when he’s walking around each day.

  • This is like when that one radio station pulled the skit during the tsunami. Ignorance is bliss… and I guess as long there are people like him who have to resort to things like that means that it still isn’t really a “United States”.

  • I am not Asian myself or even close to it, but that is probably why I think the way I do. We all need to laugh at ourselves once in awhile. I laugh when comedians of another race make fun of white people. Mainly because no matter how sad it is, it’s true.

  • I’m non-Asian and that was non-funny.  I’ve never heard this guy before, but he seems like the kind of comic who lights his own farts for a laugh.  Compared to his radio sketch, that might actually be funny.

  • FYI…I just sent the following note to the two executives listed above:

“I heard the radio sketch on actor Parry Shen’s blog —

“The radio sketch was completely OFFENSIVE — whether or not I’m Asian American — it is ugly, mean, and of the lowest class. Most of all, it is UNNECESSARY.

“I hope you will reconsider EVER programming someone like Adam Corolla again — or at least ask him to clean it up.

    “IT’S NOT FUNNY.”

I hope others will do the same.

  • …all in poor taste!!! what an ass he is!!!

  • David Lee Roth Replaced Howard Stern in the Dallas Area Radio: My thoughts
Being a Van Halen fan, going back to the late seventies when they started, I’ve always enjoyed the clownish wit of David Lee Roth. He has caused me to belly laugh more than a time or two. Since Roth replaced Stern – who I could never tolerate for very long – on free radio I’ve been tuning in the last couple of mornings. This rock and roll jester is entertaining and always was. The radio world has finally put the former mouthpiece of Van Halen in a slot where he can flourish again and radio people will make money. Of course I doubt he’ll be as successful as Stern in that slot. Roth clearly has a superior IQ and is quicker-witted than Stern. Where Stern is just simply outrageous and sometimes very funny, Roth is very funny a lot and sometimes outrageous. Roth still seems lost a little but I expect that to be normal in the first few months.

I can’t comment on Stern’s politics because I so hated the show I tuned out long ago. I’ve only heard little blips here and there. But, listening to Roth the last two mornings he is, not surprisingly, far left and ‘liberal’. He stated this himself. Though Roth is a funny man, like Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg etc. he is trapped in the life he’s led for years. He himself says he’s the drunken sailor who won the lotto. People like him get thrust into fame. When they sustain that recognition they are constantly working to promote themselves and stay on top of every little mountain all the way down and all the way. They know nothing, nothing about politics or philosophy. But, they bank on their fame and unwittingly promulgate falseness and lies they’ve never examined …and the band marches on. But, since ‘liberal’ and leftist ideas are so prevalent in the culture and among the celebrity intelligentsia (wow is that an oxymoron!) these jesters, singers and actors think they’re enlightened. They think they’re lofty non-conformist when they’re simply parroting the other mouthpieces equally ignorant and brainwashed and living the life of the roman emperor Caligula. Meanwhile the goo-goo eyed followers of Stern and the Roth-like take wit as wisdom and the deception continues and cultural divide widens.

Dennis Prager dwarfs the intellect of David Lee Roth but you’ll never see a debate on Roth’s show about politics and of course Roth is simply an entertainer whereas Prager is informative, grand fatherly and sage-like and entertaining. That would be my dream, to see Prager slay my old sacred cow David Lee Roth. But, that’ll never happen.

However, there’s a possibility that Terrible Ted Nugent and David Lee Roth would cross paths. That would be a thing to behold; two motor mouths, one right, one left, slugging it out. David Lee Roth might be funnier but The Nuge would eat his lunch philosophically. It’s good to laugh, but if all you do is laugh (play the fiddle like Nero) then someday they’ll be nothing to laugh about. Stern and Roth are ultimately hollow men and civilization will die with a whimper if men like these rule the cultural landscape. Men like this play on the playground men like Abraham Lincoln, George Washington and Ronald Reagan, build, defend and fertilized. Roth and Stern are pretty weeds.

  • That was the stupidest parody I have ever heard. And I totally agree- no one would ever try to make fun of the BET Awards. That’s not right.

    Sammi

  • Now…if Rex Navarette made that sketch…it would’ve been a different story hahahhahahaha!!!

  • I don’t even know what to say… What is this shit?

  • I have forwarded your online post to an Asian Media Watchdog group, known as the Asian Media Watch. See their site at: http://www.asianmediawatch.net/ Maybe something will come out of this.

  • I’m not sure what that big comment above was saying about Roth – anyone catch that?

But being a long time listener to Loveline with Adam and Dr. Drew, I have a hard time believing Adam Carolla can be the source of this sketch. Adam is usually rough around the edges and speaks his mind, but typically I find his ramblings are very well thought out and thought provoking. I think David Lee Roth is probably the origin of this joke. Adam doesn’t say much about the sketch, and it doesn’t seem like he even thinks it’s funny. The only way I can see this as comedy is if it’s trying to knock people off their high horse – def. not humorous to me though.

Sure people make fun of BET. No problem. In fact, I know african americans are even embarrased by BET – if anyone has watched it, that should be no shocker. It’s perpetuating stereotypes also. Right now, it’s just trash music videos.

Actually, BET is trying to revive itself – they just hired a new guy to be president of the channel, and he has a new vision for the station. Check it out: http://www.contracostatimes.com/mld/cctimes/entertainment/television/13626256.htm?source=rss&channel=cctimes_television

  • “Ching chong” are the exact “words” that ignorant little 4th graders said to me in elementary school.

So I guess we can equate Adam Corolla’s maturity level (and those of his “creative” writing team) of that of a 4th grader.

    Idiot.

  • thanks for making us aware of this

i sent an email to those producers expressing how I feel…

  • do you mind if i steal this link and post it on my site too? this is truly unbelievable. I just sent the two execs an email. I can’t express in words how furious I felt when I heard this clip. Thanks for providing the e-mails and phone numbers of whom to contact.

  • I know this is an older post, but if it wasn’t Adam Carolla, and it was say… an Asian… would the Asian minority with voices (a minority within the minority) speak up then? I mean, you mention making fun of the BET Awards… doesn’t Dave Chapelle work up that alley? Granted he disappeared and comes back worrying about Social Responsibilty… but for the longest time – it is more acceptable to be poked fun at by someone from their own experience than someone outside of it. Also, listening to the sketch, it was not funny in the least… made me just want to roll my eyes back into my head, b/c it’s just another cheap crack and I think my thick skin has already been there, resisted that.
