  • B FOR BREAKFAST

I wrote an entry awhile back that revealed I get extremely impressionable whenever I see food consumed onscreen.

When I see Buggin’ Out eating his overly-Parmesan-cheese-dusted slice of pizza in “Do The Right Thing“… I’m jonesing for a slice afterwards.  And seeing Dae-su Oh eating a live squid in “Oldboy“?  Throw that 8-legged sucker in my mouth and call him Calamari.

Yesterday, I saw “V for Vendetta” and witnessed Natalie Portman eating the ”Eggies in a Basket” that was prepared twice for her in the film.

And after the movie, all I could think about was, “I gots to get me some of… whatever that was!”  So this morning I found a recipe on-line:

    1. Using the top of a glass, cut out a circle in the middle of a piece of bread.
    2. Spray the pan with PAM.
    3. Butter both sides of the bread and place in pan on top a medium flame.  Toss in 1/2 tsp of butter in the hole and heat it well.
    4. Crack an egg.  Place it in the hole.
    5. When the egg is set, carefully flip entire bread/egg piece over to cook the other side (this is why pre-spraying the pan is vital).
    6. When done, sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on the top.
    7. Toast the hole from the bread for dipping in the yolk.

When all was said and done, it looked exactly the way it did in the movie.  And it was pretty cool that my “McDonald’s-esque egg-disc” lifted up as one piece with the bread.

But it didn’t taste as good as Natalie made it look (although I think it’s because I used that crappy multi-grain bread my wife gets).  Those crazy Brits and their kooky dishes (ie: see the British “Mucky Fat” Sandwich).

Maybe it’ll taste better if I shave my head.

  • I always saw that as being a Southern comfort dish I grew up to as a small-town kid growing up in Texas…we called it a hole-in-one.

  • yummy… never seen or heard of it… imma have to try it for my hubby :)

  • I get pretty hungry when I see good dishes online… I’m totally making that when I get home. Props for digging Oldboy, it’s such an awesome movie. If you like Korean movies, you should rent some by Ki-duk Kim- Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… and Spring and 3-Iron are both incredible. I think I’ll see V for Vendetta tonight when I grab my paycheck from the movie theatre. I’m excited about your role on “THIEF”! This is my first time commenting so, obligatory thanks for creating such a straight-forward, honest blog go here. Stay strong!

  • hahaha! you should totally shave your head, but you might look like your brother. Where has he been, he hasn’t been updating… hope he’s doing okay.

  • ohhh! you should watch Thank You For Smoking… they put a piece of American Cheese on a piece of pie i think…. maybe you’ll like that.

  • that looks like fun. i think i’ll ask the bf to make it for me…

btw, are you going to be in a feature anytime soon?

  • eggs in a basket, my mom and dad have been making that for YEARS.

oh, and don’t use PAM. pam is bad, it has alcohol as a propellant, and it actually causes the oil to stick to your pan of choice, which will over time, cause buildup, and render your pan icky.

take it from one who’s been working at williams-sonoma for the last three years. otherwise, good luck with the eggs and bread!

  • hehe, i think we used to call something similar humpty dumpties in the dorms at UB… but there was a slice of ham involved rather than cinnamon and sugar…

  • when i think of young asian male actors i think of you and john cho.  what do you think of this daniel liu character?

  • mmm…sounds/reads like it’s delish!

  • hahaha parry, i was in the same boat as you.. .but i dind’ tthink it was an egg in the center! i thought it was just a chunk of butter!

  • my white grandmother in michigan used to always make that for my cousins and I. she calls it a frog-in-a-hole. not sure why frog? but I always thought it was yummy =p

  • wow i’m gonna try to make that next time i make breakfast =)

  • I just thought it was a piece of toast with a fried egg on it. I’m gonna have to give it a try too…

  • I just saw v for vendetta for the second time yesterday. I think I’m subconsciously having a love affair with it, as I’m reading the graphic novel now too. I’m currently operating nder the title “m for malicious” lol.

  • V for Vendetta well thought out.  coming from the Wachowski brothers- not so surprising.  lol

  • holy crud! I was actually gonna try making that! …cuz it was in the KRAFT seasonal recipe magazine. That’s great. Haha.

  • Try it without the cinnamon and sugar.  Just use what you normally put on your eggs.

  • You well know that by shaving your head it will won’t taste better. Nice try with the sense of humor though. Afterall, she is a great actress.
