Michelle Maykin is 26 years old.  Diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in February 2007, Michelle underwent chemotherapy for seven months but relapsed in May 2008.

She now needs to find a bone marrow match to save her life. You could be that person. Please consider registering as a bone marrow donor. To learn more, visit projectmichelle.com.

  • thank you for this. am going to forward to all my friends. take care!

  • My goodness. They really need to find an easier way to extract bone marrow. Right now I understand it’s about equal in pain to giving birth.

  • wow, we actually finally worked together but didn’t…

    great cause!

    miss ya man

  • this is awesome, and i hope michelle finds her match. however, we need to come up with a way to have ONE NATIONAL BONE MARROW REGISTRY, versus have so many disjointed organizations. I’m currently registered with the HLA, but that probably means I won’t be surveyed as a match for Michelle right?

Actually, it’s supposed to be a lot easier now and more similar to donating blood. Plus, they give you an anesthetic (unless you don’t want it). And though you may be sore for a few days, my comedian friend, Danny Cho (who has actually donated marrow) says: “it can’t hurt as much as dying.”

There is one national marrow registry. There are just different orgs that you can register through. Unfortunately, they haven’t found a match yet, thus the effort, Project Michelle (which is not trying to be a separate organization as they are working with both the Asian American Donor Program and Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches, etc.)
