  • State Coins

My Mother-in-Law gave us this cardboard display that holds all the 50 commemorative quarters (from 1999-2008, each of the 50 states will be honored on a unique commemorative Quarter.  Five different coin designs will be issued each year and be released in the order in which the states joined the union.  The reverse of each coin symbolizes the states’s history or culture). And as the new quarters are released every year, you’re supposed to slot them into the empty holes accordingly.

You know when you just have “stuff” you need to do but it’s not really important – but it’s still piling up in the back of your mind nevertheless?

I mean like alphabetizing your DVD’s or CD’s to make ‘em easier to find.  Well, it’s been bugging me for years that I was falling behind slotting those damn quarters in.

So last week, I sorted through all our quarters.  Tossed aside the ones with “the eagle” on the reverse while keeping the others.

The afternoon went something like this: ”Let’s see… Pennsylvania… nope, got that.  Maryland… need that… need Vermont…  eagle one, can’t use that… Okay, no Confederate Flags or Burning Crosses on any southern state coins; so far, so good… ”

I then used a mallot to pound the suckers in place.  Don’t try pushing ‘em in with your thumbs, it hurts after a while.

So far my favorite ones are:

    Connecticut and Texas –

After filling them in, I noticed West Virginia held out joining the union for a long time.  Seriously – look at all the coins around West Virginia (the red state).  Sheesh.  Talk about pressure.  “Hey, West Virginia – why don’t you join?  Everybody’s doin’ it.”

And being a person hating to do things twice, I needed to keep track of what I already had without having to go through this process again.

So I made a little legend with post-its, checking off the states I already had.

I’ll trade anybody a New York or Pennsylvania for a Maine, Florida or Tennessee.

Um, you guys do this too, right?

  • no I don’t do that kinda stuff. I throw away all those collective quarters :P . But yeah, I have plenty of those states u mentioned.

  • i do it lol it’s fun =] watch out for the wisconsin quarters…there’s a defect on them and you could earn money if you have one of the first two versions of the quarter

  • …. no…
    i use the quarters :)

  • My Aunt gave me the same display but I haven’t gotten around to arranging it yet. I think I only have Connecticut in haha.

  • uh….no. Only you, Parry, only you.

On the bright side, you’ll know where to go if you’re short on-uh, quarters…

  • i have the same board!!! nd i love collecting coins from different countries… so i think its really fun =] ha now if i think im corny ill remember parry does it too =P haha

    ill trade with you… =D

nd wuts the defect on wisconsin?!?!?

  • I used to collect the pennies, but haven’t gotten around to the quarters.  Sounds like fun!  What I used to do was go to the bank and request for $100 in pennies, and go at it a roll at a time.

As for your DVD/VCD collections, check out the software Movie Collectorz @ http://www.collectorz.com .  Thats the software I use to organize my collection.

  • At work, I see a ton of quarters just pass through, over and over again.  So, my advice is–make friends with someone with a lot of quarters in their work, ask them to keep an eye out for the ones you need, and any ones that are new.

  • Uh Parry…….Um, no I don’t this on my Sundays.  LOL  Damn, you are so practicing to be a parent….gettin’ old man !  Next thing you know you’ll be doing puzzles !  LMAO !  j/k  Seriously tho, it’s all good….I used to collect but I lost interest.  Now all I do is collect CDs and DVDs into the thousands.

  • my mom collects them too

  • actually, I collect these also, but I just put them all in a box, but I should get a nifty board like that to take out all the duplicates so then I can use them. ya never know when you need an extra quarter!

  • I am a big dork – I collect them and have all the quarters out right now!

  • Parry,

check your quarters…the U.S. mint announced that there are printing errors on some Wisconsin state quarters.  If you have either one…they’re worth over a thousand each.  can’t hurt to check.

  • I think everybody collects them trying to make some easy dough in the future!! such as me!! hehe hopefully Coin collectors can go to the Appraisal show and SHow OFF our nifty collection of QUARTERSS!! Yayyy!! Hopefully the nifty quarters can be our retirement fund!!! ::crossing fingers!! ;-P

  • Yeah, the land around West Virgina was part of the first states in the Union.  West Virgina only became a state after it split from Virgina during the Civil War.  Thus, West Virginia doesn’t get a state quarter for a while.  In fact, you should have a good part of the southwest filled in before WV.

  • I had over $75 worth of new quarters saved up! name it i have it!

  • so i have maine and florida…. maybe you’ll be 50 cents richer if im feelin generous and give them to u… haha … so i was reading previous entries and they address u as ‘parry’… and something about that irks me… haha… i feel like ur name is one of those names where u gotta say the whole ‘parryshen’ as one word for hte full effect… haha… random thought i guess…

  • aww, how cute. i used to collect them, but then i got sick of doing it and quit. i should probably start up again, considering that they’ll be valuable collectors’ items in time. eh.

  • Hahaha! I have one of those cardboard things too. I actually keep mine updated as soon as I get a new quarter. Latest one… CALIFORNIA!!!!!

  • watch out for the P or the D onthe GW side…different places the coins are minted..the D is harder to come by…

    sorry if i just up’d your obsession…

  • I have all three coins you’re looking for, but I also have the ones you want to trade for.

  • i’ve collected… hehe so fun.. haven’t bought that map though. i just put it in a jar. dude, justin lin had a short film showing called, “Spotlighting.” interesting story about… well… i don’t want to go on about that. anyways… have fun collecting!

  • NERD!

    here’s a coin i think you might like that i found…http://c.myspace.com/00067/38/76/67246783_l.jpg

btw.. my producing partner is looking to sell his pool table….POOL TABLE

  • hahahah!! i used to try to collect all of them but then i lost interest after a while.

  • OH YEA I’m gonna join Parry’s coin club – I have that cardboard thingy and I have all the coins but Wisconsin. Anyone have a Wisconsin?

  • I did not know you were married..and having a baby at that! Wow!

  • My mom is into collecting all the coins, she gave some to me, but I had to use them to do some laundry…

  • i think that’s cuz west virginia wasn’t a real state until civil war hit, and they made it a state to counter-balance the slave states.

  • laughing silly here, because I had them all and just decided it was ridiculous so I used them up in the laundry… being more a minimalist, thought it better to get rid of those quarters and make the sheets smell fresh in the process.. as for the cd and dvd collection(over 500 asian dvd) so yeh I did get around to color coding the side of the jewel cases with appropriate colors for each category, korean, japanese, andy lau(have em all) stephen chow, tony leung and so forth…I thought god is this pathetic…but it does look neat and I can find what I want in a second…but still the minimalist in me said get rid of a 100 of them..so off went jet li to a consumate fan and off went half of stephen chow and so on(no didn’t touch andy lau, not crazy) If I had known earlier I would have mailed the crazy quarters to you…like to help out lol… as for west virginian just laughing on that one. I mean living in south jersey , it is like the south here would love to succeed  from the north…who knows maybe they will just stop sending the casino money to the north until a war breaks out…. have a good day and don’t sweat the missing quarters…they always turn up sooner or later…

  • i do that too. i think i have most of them. question, why are some of yours goldish looking? or it just the leight reflecting off them weird? haha anyways i can’t wait until all of the coins are out! =]

  • wow you want florida?  man theyre runnin like water down here, hahaha…..

  • PARRY YOU DORK!

Oh man…I actually do too! hehe it’s somewhere in the closet…

Also–I updated my profile pic JUST FOR YOU!!! =D

  • i do! and i’m not even american. which means i don’t have a 50-hole holder. =P i didn’t know until recently that only five were coming out per year because i figured i wasn’t ever going to progress! we had ten provinces and two territories (added another territory) so the year we did the province/territory thing, we had a new one each month.
coin collection in general feels kinda loser-ish but collection states/provinces is fun!

  • i have all of them up til now  ~_^
